SOFTBALL: Machalette leads Springfield over Christopher Dock

Montgomery Media / BOB RAINES Kim Machalette pitches Springfield to a win over Christopher Dock on Wednesday.
Springfield knew coming into its non-conference clash with Christopher Dock that a win would probably mean a ticket to the district playoffs. With great pitching and timely hitting, the Spartans achieved their goal.

“This game basically decided whether or not we were going to make it into the playoffs and we came through,” Springfield coach Ed Jones said. “We have had a rough season this year, but we have beaten some good teams. I thought we were going to be a very good team in Suburban One, but we had some issues, lost three varsity players and was forced to play girls out of position. We just came together today.”

Led by a complete game one-hitter by Kim Machalette, Springfield may have clinched a spot in districts with a 3-1 win over Dock. Machalette carried a no-hitter into the fifth and ended with seven strikeouts. Although Dock starter Lauren Weidler also had an impressive outing, clutch hits gave the Spartans their much-needed W.
