BASEBALL: La Salle edges St. Joseph's Prep

St. Joseph’s Prep traveled to La Salle Wednesday afternoon for a Philadelphia Catholic league match up with first place on the line. La Salle coach Joe Parisi described the game as “like playoff game.”

Entering the game both teams were expecting a closer contested game than the teams’ prior match up just shy of a month ago when the Hawks took it to the Explorers 20-6.

“The first time we played them I used the word aberration,” Parisi said. “It was like 35 degrees out with a 40 mph wind and they handled it better than we did.”

Wednesday’s game featured great pitching, pitting La Salle’s Dominic Cuosi against Penn State commit, Tom Mullin. Both pitchers labored a little in the first inning before settling in during the middle innings.

The first sign of trouble for either pitcher came in the fourth inning when the Explorers put the first runs of the game on the board on a pair of RBI singles by shortstop AJ Gresnaik and first baseman Chris Melilo.

For Cuosi his trouble spot didn’t come until SJP’s final at bat. With two outs and runners on first and second Hawks shortstop Pat O’Dell stroked an RBI single to cut La Salle’s lead to one. Cuosi regrouped to get the next SJP hitter to hit into a game ending fielder’s choice to preserve a 2-1 Explorers victory.
