GIRLS LACROSSE: Cross, Upper Dublin topple Wissahickon

For Montgomery Media / ADRIANNA HOFF Wissahickon's Jackie Hibbs tries to stop Upper Dublin's Sam Boyd during Thursday's Suburban One American Conference action.
It’s always intense when Upper Dublin plays Wissahickon, but this particular game meant more because they came in as the top two teams in the Suburban One American Conference. As if that wasn’t enough, Wissahickon’s only loss this season came at the hands of the Cardinals, and the game was at home under the lights. Motivation was all around, but quality shines through in the end and Upper Dublin just had too much of it.

“This is a neighborhood rivalry, all the girls know each other on and off the field,” Upper Dublin coach Dee Cross said. “We knew it would be a tough game. I told the girls that they can’t come out flat against Wissahickon and we worked really hard in practice. It was a total team effort.”

Upper Dublin continued their undefeated run, downing Wissahickon 11-7. Although the Trojans were in it the entire way, they could never quite grab hold of the game. Led by Syracuse-bound senior Julie Cross’ five goals, the Cardinals used defense and possession to make sure Wissahickon never shifted the momentum too much in its favor. It was heartbreak for the Trojans, but they still remain in second place and are good enough to make a run at the state playoffs.
